Create an Event

Create an Event

Introduction

In this theory you will learn how to use events to structure assets and publish them for a lecture, competition or similar event.

In order to follow this theory, you need the Manager role.

Curricula and Events

The Hacking-Lab platform distinguishes between two types of events:

  1. A curriculum allows to publish multiple events under one umbrella. This can be useful in the following cases:

    • A lecture / course spanning multiple days

    • Grouping challenges in multiple levels / categories

    • Grouping challenges into multiple categories (e.g. web security, network security, system security, ...)

  2. An event is a single group of units (theories, quizzes and challenges), which are published together.

Creating a new curriculum or event

To create a new event or curriculum, log in to the frontend and navigate to Manager > Event Management > Go To:

In the bottom right, click on the + icon and select the event type you would like to create:

Basic information

In the dialog, provide the following information:

  • Title: a short title which allows participants to find the event (e.g. Web Security April 2020)

  • Begin date: the start date of the event, including time (i.e. the event will only be visible to students after this date)

  • End date: the end date of the event, including time (i.e. the event will not be visible to students after this date)

  • Description: a short description of the event

  • Visibility: see next section

  • Accessibility: see next section

  • An image / logo for the event

Exam rules

In the first section you can enable/disable the following settings:

  • Enable internal Ranking

  • Show users with no points in the ranking

  • Set an exam duration

  • Export the configuration

Access control

You can control who can access an event in which way using the two fields Visibility and Accessibility. Using the visibility you can control whether the event is visible to everyone (public) or only people with an access code (private). Using the accessibility you can control how people can get access to an event. Depending on your requirements, you might want to consider the following options:

  • Public and Open: A public training event, visible and accessible to anyone with an account on your instance

  • Private and Static Token: A private event where multiple people can register using an access token (e.g. UOKN-9ASE-VBCU-UAVH). An access token can be used by multiple people, with a configurable number of maximum activations.

  • Private and Voucher: Generates a one-time code for each participant, which can then be sent via email or some other means

Please note that it's not possible to change between static token / voucher once one has been set.

Static tokens

If you selected static tokens as the access option you can configure your token by clicking the following button:

This dialog allows you to customize the code as well as the number of times it can be redeemed.

Vouchers

If you chose to use unique vouchers instead, you can generate additional vouchers by using this option:

Note that if you need more than 200 vouchers you have to generate them in batches. After you're done generating all your vouchers, download All access tokens to get a list of all generated vouchers.

Adding events to a curriculum

If you created a curriculum you can now add events to it by using the corresponding buttons in the events section:

Note that when creating a sub event, the end date is optional and inherits the end date from the curriculum. Use the arrow buttons to re-order events and the published checkbox to quickly show / hide them. You can edit an event using the pencil icon, which allows you to add assets to it.

Assigning content to an event

Once you have your basic event or curriculum structure set up, you
need to assign assets (theories, quizzes and challenges) to them. Use
the Add units button to assign new content:

If you add quizzes or challenges to the list, you also get the option
to automatically checking answers (only if the challenge supports
goldnuggets) and enabling training mode (shows step-by-step
instructions, if available). You can also customize how many points a
given challenge should give:

Previewing

Once you have set up everything you should preview the event and all
of its content to ensure it is to your liking. You can do this by
assigning yourself as a teacher to the curriculum or event:

Note that only users with the Teacher role will be visible in this list.

Now you can select Teacher and then navigate to the desired event:

Please read the teacher instructions for more information on how to use this menu.

Publishing

If you're happy with the event, you can publish it by toggling the Published switch on the curriculum / event and clicking Save:
